Tirril hosts one of the area's finest dining pubs, The Queens Head Inn, which is less than 10 minutes walk from April Cottage. Once the home of Tirril Brewery, the Queens Head is now owned by Robinsons and offer a varying selection of hand-pulled real ales.
2 miles away, right by Lake Ullswater is the village of Pooley Bridge, which has several shops including an outdoor equipment shop, a gift shop, a post-office/newsagent/convenience store all under one roof and a selection of cafes. Pooley Bridge also has three pubs each serving lunches and evening meals.
Your hosts Christine and Harold Threlkeld are well-renowned for their famous Lakeland breakfasts which will get your day off to a fine start before you take off to explore the fells, take a trip on the lake steamer or if you simply wish to browse the shops in Penrith (2.5 miles away) or Pooley Bridge.
Further along the Lake is Aira Force waterfalls, which are a spectacular sight and well worth a visit - for the more energetic some of the Lake District's highest fells are located at the Southern end of Ullswater, including Helvellyn, Place Fell, St Sunday Crag, Sheffield Pike, Dove & Hart Crags and Fairfield. One walk that is highly recommended is the Lakeshore path (approx. 7 miles) from Howtown to Glenridding, which can be easily accessed by taking a short steamer ride either from Pooley Bridge or Glenridding.
There is also a selection of local walk guides which can be borrowed and used to explore the area.
